Around Town: Martin Smith, Chinese Churches, Handmade & Fair Trade . . .

Martin Smith was front man for Delirious? for some 20 years; now he is touring on his own.

Did you feel the mountains tremble? Well, probably not, but there’s a good chance you’ve sung the song. And you’ll be able to hear from the man who wrote it this Sunday (November 16). Martin Smith, formerly lead singer for Delirious?, will be at Coastal Church in Vancouver as part of his ‘God’s Great Dance Floor’ tour.

Delirious? disbanded five years ago, but their legacy lives on. They were pioneers in reaching out beyond the ‘Christian ghetto’ with their music. As Wikipedia puts it, “Between 1997 and 2001, the band targeted the majority of its work towards a mainstream audience, with several singles reaching the top 20 on the UK music charts.

They also had a major influence on the worship music scene. Apart from ‘Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?, songs such as  ‘I Could Sing of Your Love Forever’ and ‘Shout to the North’ are still sung regularly all over the world. As a single artist, Smith has worked with Jesus Culture, Worship Together and Hillsong.

Opening for Smith will be Village Church Worship Band The Wind & the Waves (from Surrey) and Ryan McAllister (from the Fraser Valley).

I don’t know if Smith will sing ‘Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?,’ but I hope some of its spirit will pervade Coastal Church:

Did you feel the mountains tremble?
Did you hear the oceans roar?
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ the risen one . . .

And we can see that God you’re moving
A time of Jubilee is coming
When young and old will turn to Jesus
Fling wide your heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

worshipworkshop1There will also be an opportunity the next morning (November 17) to spend time with Martin Smith – and his special guest Brian Doerksen – for a Worship Leaders Workshop.

They will be joined by Phil Spoelstra, Eric Damewood, Steve Klassen, Steve Matthews, John Broadhead and Brent Gibson as they delve into “key areas of the worship arts, such as: touring, band leadership, record labels, worship songwriting, composition, audio, lighting and visual effects, video, streaming and audio controllers and recording studio.”

Chinese Church Conference / Art Show

A Chinese Christian Art exhibit opens this week at Carey, with an open house November 22.

A Chinese Christian Art exhibit begins this week at Carey, with an opening reception November 22.

Carey offers a number of courses in Chinese and a North American Chinese Church Ministry Concentration in their MDiv program. So it is not surprising that they will host both a Celebration of Chinese Christian Art and an Intergenerational and Intercultural Chinese Canadian Church Forum this fall.

The art exhibition opens this Saturday (November 15), with an opening reception a week later (November 22), 4 – 6 pm, at Carey on the UBC campus.

The Intergenerational and Intercultural Chinese Canadian Church Forum takes place November 20 – 22. Among the topics will be: Trends and Figures: 2011 Census and Implications for Chinese Canadian Churches; Between Two Worlds: Raising up 3rd Culture Kids; Releasing the Potential of 3rd Culture Kids; and Missional Church Planting: The Secret Recipe for Thriving Church Planters.

All Handmade Sale / Fair Trade Market

This weekend will provide a couple of great opportunities to buy handmade and fair trade gifts for Christmas:

allhandmade1* The All Handmade Sale at Grandview Calvary Baptist Church, just off Commercial Drive, is a celebration of handmade, homemade and homegrown items made by local artisans. The church opens its doors Friday evening (November 14) and during the day Saturday “to our larger community to share our artistic gifts and expressions.” The sale also functions as a small fundraiser for charity.

* Ten Thousand Villages, the oldest and largest fair trade non-profit organization in North America, partners with thousands of talented artisans around the world in healthy business relationships. And they’re presenting a Fair Trade Christmas Market at St. Andrew’s United Church just east of Lonsdale in North Vancouver on Saturday.
