Regent College Evening Lectures

Oxford professor Valentine Cunningham will discuss the impact of the Authorized Bible.

Oxford professor Valentine Cunningham will discuss the impact of the Authorized Bible.

Every year Regent College presents an impressive set of speakers for its Summer Public Lecture Series. Some are Regent profs, but most come from universities and seminaries all over North America and beyond; they all address some really interesting topics.

Next Wednesday (May 20), for example, Rikk Watts from Regent will examine this key issue: Jerusalem Versus Athens Revisited: Why the 21st Century is the Most Christian and the Most Confused.

On June 3, Oxford professor Valentine Cunningham will tackle this topic: Scissored and Pasted: the Impact of the Authorized Version of the Bible.

And on June 8, author and law professor David Skeel will look at True Paradox – How Christianity Makes Sense of Our Complex World. (Earlier this year, First Things hosted a lecture and book-signing by him on the same topic.)

I have attended many of these lectures over the years; they’re always enlightening and usually entertaining as well.

And across campus, a Regent prof (or, to be more precise, a Regent prof who has just taken on a new role at Crandall University in Moncton, New Brunswick), John Stackhouse, will be leading an event at St. Andrew’s Hall.

Christian Apologetics: Ready to Give an Answer for the Hope That is Within You is a four-day event based in two locations: Stackhouse (at St. Andrew’s; live feed at Presbyterian College Montreal) and professor Robert Fennell (at Presbyterian College Montreal; live feed at St. Andrew’s Hall).

New Jubilee House okayed

Vancouver City Council has approved plans for the New Jubilee House.

Vancouver City Council has approved plans for the New Jubilee House.

A project of the 127 Society for Housing has been given the go-ahead by city hall. Notification from Christ Church Cathedral said:

On April 15, after emotional public hearings, City Council approved a development permit for the New Jubilee House site and rezoned the present Jubilee House site to permit construction of the apartment building that will pay for the New Jubilee House. In summing up his decision, Councillor Meggs cited [Christ Church’s theologian in residence] Ellen Clark-King’s call for a “green and just city.”

And, on Thursday, April 23, the Court of Appeal allowed the appeal to overturn the lower court decision that began this great period of uncertainty. So, a great sigh of relief. There is much more to do, but it is time for a great prayer of thanksgiving!

For a couple of accounts of the rather complex history of the project, check out articles earlier this year in the Georgia Straight and the Globe and Mail.

The Christ Church Cathedral website describes its relationship with the 127 Society:

In 1981, Cathedral parishioners started the 127 Society for Housing. The society owns and operates three affordable housing projects with 262 units in Vancouver’s Downtown South that house approximately 300 low income residents who are often hard to house. The Cathedral community continues to offer financial support to the society through its annual budget.
