From the United Church of Canada, BC Conference:

June 10th, 1937 – July 20th, 2014

With sadness, we announce the passing of a true pioneer and respected gentleman. He will be missed by his children: Ian, Lisa, Maria and Bill, and his grandchildren: Curtis & Wilson, Zoe & Anya, Adam & Zephrenn, and his surviving siblings: Grace, Marion & Fred. Also, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Alvin will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial service to be held 7:00 pm Thursday, July 24th at Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings St., Vancouver. Funeral service on Friday, July 25 at 11:00 am at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church at 1022 Nelson St. , Vancouver.

In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to BC Conference United Church of Canada Native Ministries.

Alvin served on Conference staff in Native Ministries for a number of years. Since then he has been involved in numerous church committees and in various kinds of work in our church, including serving on the Conference Executive, the General Council Executive, and the national Aboriginal Circle. He was instrumental in getting the churches together to help prepare for and plan the Truth and Reconciliation Vancouver gathering.

Alvin seemed to know just about everybody up and down the BC coast and was a good friend to many. His passing is a great loss to our church, to the work of reconciliation in Canada, and to the practice of cultivating deep friendships across barriers. He will be greatly missed.
