In the 1930s Dietrich Bonhoeffer ran an underground seminary in Nazi Germany offering theological education with a strong emphasis on daily communal practices. He described these practices in Life Together, a classic that remains challenging. What might it mean to teach this book? Instead of absorbing it into our standard classroom practices, what if we took it seriously as offering a vision of Christian learning? David Smith will explore this question through students’ responses to a recent course on Bonhoeffer that sought to integrate an emphasis on formative practice.

David Smith is a world leader in the integration of pedagogy and the Christian faith. Currently the director of Graduate Studies in Education at Calvin College, he recently authored a book entitled, Teaching and Christian Practices: Reshaping Faith and Learning (Eerdmans, 2011). Read his full bio.
