Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.”

All throughout the Bible, we see God’s heart for justice, His love for the widow, orphan, immigrant, and the poor, His compassion for the marginalized, oppressed, and forgotten.

Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”

We read these verses and nod our head in agreement. But if we are really honest with ourselves, I think that we all love the idea of changing the world more than actually changing the world. It’s possible that we all love compassion and justice until there’s a personal cost to living compassionately, loving mercy, and seeking justice.

Worship and justice go hand in hand because as we worship God we become more like Him – to hate what He hates, to love what He loves, to pursue justice as He does. Justice is a natural overflow of drawing near to God.

We invite you join us for an intimate evening of Worship and Justice. Our worship time will be led by The Well, the traveling worship team from Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Montana. Insoo Kim, pastor of Life Church Vancouver, will lead us in a time of dreaming about what it might look like for us to walk together to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.

Come and worship. Come and intercede. Together let’s “seek justice, defend the oppressed, take up the cause of the fatherless and plead the case of the widow.”

We will be putting together 100 care packages at the end of our time together. These packages will then be handed out around Downtown Eastside on Love Vancouver Day (Sunday, October 22, 4-6:30pm). We are collecting the following materials. Please bring whatever you can with you to the Evening of Worship and Justice.

100 pairs of warm socks (50 men’s, 50 women’s)
100 packs of mints
100 packs of gum
100 cereal bars
100 travel size deodorants
100 toothbrushes
100 travel size toothpastes
feminine products for 50 bags (3 pads per bag–150 total)
