While the sights and sounds of Christmas are popping up in malls and concerts, much of that will not be seen or heard by most of the marginalized in DTES. Black Friday will ironically be another black Friday for those without a home.
Alex Watts, an Indigenous Christian brother who once was homeless, remembers all too well what it is like not to have a Christmas, to be alone on Christmas and no home to go back to. He recalls feeling hopeless, unloved and no one to talk to. So after getting back on his feet, five years ago on Christmas day he initiated and organized the first “Hope & Love For You” event at Main and Hastings. By God’s grace, and with donations and help from friends and community, he brought 500 bag lunches, soup and home-made Christmas cards, gently used clothing and Christmas cheer to the marginalized in this neighborhood. Amazingly this continues year after year and the same event is happening again this Christmas morning:
DATE: Christmas, December 25
TIME: 9:30am – 1:30pm
LOCATION: 384 Main Street (Northeast corner of Main St./E. Hastings St.)
It is a truly community event which is radically different from the commercially driven Black Friday or countless Christmas parties around town. I am thankful to God to have been part of Alex effort via coordinating the carol singing on this often forgotten corner of Vancouver. Last year, with your donated food and help, I was able to complete the event when Alex suddenly fell too sick to continue. To share the spirit and joy of Christmas, I am inviting you and your friends to consider joining others in this Christmas morning carolling.
As I will be away visiting family this Christmas, to register, please email the carolling coordinator Steven Cheng: email@example.com with your available time slot on Christmas morning (10am-11:30am, 11:30-1:00pm, or both) on or before December 20.
Then on Saturday, December 21, all carollers are invited to a carolling practice at Vancouver Chinese Baptist Church at 7474 Culloden Street. The time will be 1:30- 3:30pm and the practice will be in Room B3-5 in the basement (enter via the office side door).
You can also help by collecting gently used clothing and bringing them down at 9:30am (or soon after) on Christmas Day at the above corner. You can also consider assisting the sandwich making, manning the tables on Christmas Day, or donating some of the needed food items.
For more details on those, please contact Alex directly at (604) 652-0970. For general info, please also check: https://www.facebook.com/hopeandlove4u.ca/.
Thank you for your participation in past years and I sincerely hope you will do the same plus spread the word this year, for the less fortunate in DTES.
