History of Colonization in Canada

On Feb. 11 the First Nations Office of the Archdiocese of Vancouver will be hosting a workshop on the History and Legacy of Colonization in Canada. This workshop will offer insights into the experiences of Aboriginal People in Canada and the trauma caused by colonization and Residential Schools. Workshop attendees will be informed on the history of colonization in Canada in a way that is accessible to Catholics. Aboriginal representatives will address such issues as truths and misconceptions about their communities, and the legacy of colonization – both failures and successes.

As Canada’s history of colonization has been a subject that has not been openly discussed within our church community, we hope that this workshop will inspire dialogue and communion. There will also be an opportunity to hear from Aboriginal witnesses and a time for self-reflection and guidance on our next steps towards communion as members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), this workshop is a response to the recommendations made in their final report, specifically to Call to Action #59: We call upon church parties to the Settlement Agreement to develop ongoing education strategies to ensure that their respective congregations learn about their church’s role in colonization, the history and legacy of residential schools, and why apologies to former residential school students, their families, and communities were necessary.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) is an investigating body created by the federal government to: 1) Collect first-hand testimony of what happened in Indian Residential Schools and; 2) Compile Calls to Action in order to move forward as a nation towards reconciliation.

Join us on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the John Paul II Pastoral Centre, 2885 Saint John Paul II Way in the Karol Wojtyla Hall. Event is free and includes lunch.
