2017 – the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
World renowned scholar of the reformation, Professor Randall Zachman will examine a range of positions on the use of images in the worship life and piety of the Sixteenth Century with a view to the deployment of the arts for faith and life in our own. Professor Zachman will present a paper on the controversy over images in the Sixteenth Century. A panel with a member from each of the theological colleges in the consortium at UBC (Regent, St. Mark’s, Carey College and VST) will respond.
Panelists include: Dr. Iwan Russell-Jones, Eugene and Jan Peterson Associate Professor of Theology and the Arts, Regent College; Dr. Axel Schoeber, Associate Professor of Supervised Ministry Director of the Mentored Ministry, Carey College; Rabbi Dr. Laura Duhan Kaplan, Director of Inter-religious Studies and Professor of Jewish Studies, Vancouver School of Theology; and Dr. Paul Burns, Dean of Liberal Arts for Corpus Christi College, St. Mark’s Corpus Christi.
Prof. Randall Zachman is Professor of Reformation Studies at University of Notre Dame. Zachman’s area of interest is the history of Christian thought from the Reformation period to the present. Zachman is the author of Reconsidering John Calvin (Cambridge University Press, 2012), Image and Word in the Theology of John Calvin (University of Notre Dame Press, 2007), John Calvin as Teacher, Pastor, and Theologian: The Shape of his Writing and Thought (Baker Academic, 2006), and The Assurance of Faith: Conscience in the Theology of Martin Luther and John Calvin (Westminster John Knox Press, 2005) He has co-edited Conciliation and Confession (Notre Dame, 2004), and has edited John Calvin and Roman Catholicism: Critique and Engagement, Then and Now (Baker Academic, 2008). Zachman has published articles in The Journal of Religion, The Scottish Journal of Theology, Calvin Theological Journal, Concordia Theological Journal, as well as chapters in other volumes.
