TRINITY WESTERN UNIVERSITY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE 20TH ANNUAL MEL SMITH LECTURE WILL FEATURE PRESTON MANNING.
Mr. Manning’s lecture explores wide spread disillusionment with politics and governments generally. The rise of populist forces world wide. Rejection of the left-centre-right conceptualization of politics by next generation Canadians. Polarization over energy and the environment. Lack of consensus on how to reduce income inequality. National unity strained by western alienation and identity politics, with a federal election looming in the fall of 2019.
What can Canadians with an understanding of and commitment to the Christian faith contribute to political discourse and action in politically tumultuous times? The lecture is open to the public and will be followed by a question-and-answer period.
During the event, the recipient of the 2019-20 Mel Smith Scholarship will be announced. Each year, this scholarship is awarded to a TWU student of exceptional academic ability, majoring in Canadian history or political science.
The Mel Smith Special Collection—chronicling federal-provincial relations during the crucial period 1967 to 1992—is housed in TWU’s archives and includes a comprehensive set of professional and personal constitutional papers. The collection provides a unique, B.C. perspective on Canadian constitutional issues, and is available to students and researchers from all institutions, please visit http://archives.twu.ca/
