Interface at Regent College offers lectures, articles and other resources that probe and preserve the relationship between theology and science—working toward healing the breach between these disciplines as they have taken shape in our late modern age. In 2020/2021, the Interface project focuses especially on promoting the engagement with science in ministry education at Regent College.

Join us on September 28 as we welcome Dr. Sy (Seymour) Garte, who will give a lecture titled A Scientist’s Journey from Atheism to Faith. This talk will focus on Dr. Garte’s early upbringing in atheism, his indoctrination into a scientific worldview, and the beginnings of his questioning of materialism based on quantum physics and molecular biology. He will include examples from physics such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the observer effect, quantum entanglement, and the complexity of biochemical systems such as protein synthesis, photosynthesis and abiogenesis. Dr. Garte will discuss how these scientific findings made him question pure materialism and begin to wonder if being agnostic about God was more rational than strict atheism.

Dr. Sy (Seymour) Garte holds a PhD in biochemistry and has been a tenured professor at New York University, Rutgers University, and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as Division Director at the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health and interim vice president for research at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is currently visiting professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Rutgers University. He has published over two hundred peer-reviewed scientific papers and four books.

Dr. Garte is a fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA) and serves as vice president for the Washington, DC metro chapter of the ASA. He was a member of the board of advisors of the John Templeton Foundation and has consulted and blogged for the BioLogos Foundation. Dr. Garte has published articles in Perspectives in Science and Christian Faith and elsewhere and is the editor-in-chief of God and Nature. He has given presentations on the intersection of biochemistry, evolution, and theology at several conferences devoted to science and Christianity. Dr Garte became a Christian later in life and is now the lay leader of the United Methodist Church in Rockville, MD.
