Hidden Legacies is a short documentary by award winning filmmaker Lisa Jackson, profiling young people whose parents and grandparents attended government-initiated, church-run, Indian Residential Schools. In their own words, these inter-generational survivors – a rapper, a mother, a boxer, a social work student and others – share their stories of struggle, resistance and resilience. They show how land, spiritual practice, and family have been sources of strength and transformation.
Panel discussion after the film screening will include Char Linklater, Rupert Richardson as well as speakers who will discuss the distinctions and connections between Indigenous struggles and experiences and the legacy of the Komagata Maru and the anti-colonial Ghadar Movement. Why and how does the legacy of Indian Residential Schools matter in migrant communities? How do we build solidarity without ignoring or appropriating one another’s stories?
