Around Town: Science in the Valley, Lapu-Lapu Concert, Made for This . . .

Science in the Valley for Grades 3 to 7 is hosted on TWU’s Langley campus and taught by TWU students.

Students, staff and faculty at Trinity Western University (TWU) have, over the past 20 years, welcomed young students from the wider community to learn more about environmental stewardship and creation care.

A recent article on the TWU site states:

Science in the Valley (SIV) is taught by passionate university students who bring science and environmental studies to life for younger learners.

Organized by staff and professors from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences (FNAS) with support from the university, the program has been running since 2005.

SIV has been highly popular with local schools and homeschool communities, providing engaging, hands-on science education to elementary and middle school students.

Science in the Valley’s Chemistry and Biology programs take place in TWU’s science labs and are taught by TWU students.

Each year, approximately 3,400 students participate in one of four SIV field studies: Salmon in the Valley, Ecosystems, Biology and Chemistry.

Designed for students in grades 3 to 7, each program offers hands-on educational experiences aligned with BC’s Ministry of Education learning outcomes.

Partnerships with Salmon River Enhancement Society and Beem Credit Union provide generous funding to help subsidize participation for students from schools facing financial barriers. . . . .

While the Salmon and Ecosystems programs take place outdoors in TWU’s Ecosystems Study Area – a diverse habitat home to many plant and animal species, including some that are rare or endangered – the Chemistry and Biology programs are hosted in TWU’s science labs, where young students can conduct experiments in a real university setting.

A recent open house event coincided with a visit by grade 3 students from R.C. Garnett Demonstration School and welcomed the Township of Langley Mayor & Council.

Lapu-Lapu Benefit Concert

It is getting on to two months since the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy, but support for the Filipino community continues.

One benefit concert will take place at South Delta Baptist Church June 22:

Join us for a powerful, soul-stirring evening of music, culture and celebration of unity, featuring multi-award-winning, JUNO-nominated artist Warren Dean Flandez, alongside a lineup of special surprise guests.

Hosted by Jason Pires of Global BC, this is a free community event.

We kindly ask that you RSVP in advance to help us create a welcoming experience for everyone. Seating is general admission and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Admission is free, but donations are encouraged – 100 percent goes directly to those impacted by the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival tragedy, via United Way BC’s Kapwa Strong Fund.

For several weeks following the act of violence at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival, the Kapwa Centre operated from Christ City Church, just west of where the attack took place.

The Kapwa Strong entry on the Filipinobc.com site states:

On April 26, 2025, an act of violence after the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver claimed lives and left our community in mourning. Our hearts are with the families and all those affected as the Filipino Canadian community and beyond grieves this devastating loss.

Anyone looking for a full day at South Delta could go to their Kids Family Service & Carnival, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Made for This

Alpha Canada is based in New Westminster, but it is asking churches across Canada to join Made for This, a national prayer campaign for Canadian high schools.

They will have many allies as they move ahead. This supportive comment is from the Canadian Pacific District of The Alliance Canada:

There are 4,911 high schools in Canada. That’s 4,911 places filled with students looking for purpose, belonging, meaning and connection.

They’re spiritually curious and have deep questions about life and faith. They’re hungry for something real.

Now imagine this:

Every one of those schools, every student and staff member who walks the hallways, covered in prayer.

What if every church across Canada adopted two high schools to pray for? One close to your home and one close to your heart. What could happen? How would we see God moving?

The rising generation can change the world, and our role in that change is prayer. Prayer changes everything. The emerging generation is made for these times. The Church in Canada is made for this moment.

Shaila Visser is asking us to commit ourselves to the rising generation. Image from Faith Today

Shaila Visser is National Director of Alpha Canada and Global Senior Vice President of Alpha International.

She addressed the timeliness, and importance, of addressing the new generation in her Final Word for the May/June 2025 issue of Faith Today:

“When Jesus walked the earth, He stopped, noticed and moved toward those in need. Today, as we look at the rising generation, do we truly see them?

Canada’s young people are creative, resilient and full of potential. But they’re also anxious, lonely and uncertain about the future. Social media shapes their identity and the pressures of the world weigh on them.

Yet, just as Jesus calmed the storm for His disciples, He can meet this generation in their struggles.

What if we each committed to pray for one school over the next year? Imagine the impact of calling on Jesus to bring them true hope, strength and transformation.

Will you stop, notice and pray?”
