Holden Evening Prayer is a contemplative and beautifully melodic vesper service composed by Marty Haugen in 1985. Originally written for a Lutheran retreat center in Holden Village, Washington, it has since become a beloved setting for evening worship in many Christian communities.
This service features simple yet powerful sung prayers, with a call-and-response structure that encourages congregational participation.
It features elements such as: The Service of Light – A candlelit beginning that symbolizes Christ as the light of the world. Psalmody and Canticles – Including the Psalm of the Day and the Magnificat (Mary’s Song), which is central to the service.
Scripture Readings and Reflection – A time for scripture, a short homily or meditation, and silent prayer. Intercessory Prayers – Sung prayers for the world, the church, and those in need.
The music of Holden Evening Prayer is gentle, flowing, and meditative, making it a deeply spiritual experience. It provides a peaceful space for reflection, renewal, and connection with God.
We are delighted to include it as part of our Sunday Music Series in-person and and via Zoom.
