What role does religion play in US war and foreign
policy? For most of American history, the
conventional answer would have been simple:
none. Over the last twenty years, however,
historians have uncovered a rich and surprisingly
diverse set of religious influences on how the UnitedStates interacts with the rest of the world. Yet, as
with much else in American society, Donald Trump
and his key advisers are scrambling our
understanding of America’s faith-based foreign
policy. Join Andrew to discuss the surprising past,
confusing present, and uncertain future of Americanreligion and its role in war and foreign policy.
Andrew Preston is Distinguished Professor of
Diplomacy and Statecraft at the University of
Virginia and author of the award-winning Sword of
the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War
and Diplomacy. Andrew is the UVic History Dept.
