Maria Gaudin graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Printmaking from Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB. She is currently working towards an MATS in the Christianity and the Arts concentration at Regent College.

Over the past few years many of Maria’s life experiences have revolved around death and grief. Since studying at Regent College, she has been able to combine these experiences with theological reflection and has incorporated them into her artistic practice. The themes of death and life are her main focus in this series, which studies the progress of a decaying tree in Pacific Spirit Park. As the tree dies, it becomes one with the soil, which in turn provides the nourishment for new growth to spring forth where the tree once stood.

Maria typically chooses to work in a partial abstract style in order to give the viewer something familiar to grasp onto while also leaving space for contemplation on the mystery of an abstract work of art. She relates this process to how she understands God—the familiarity we see in Jesus Christ as man, and the mystery of God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Maria has found that this approach allows her to connect with her audience in a uniquely powerful way.
