“A thrilling young trumpeter and astute bandleader with a unique spark in his playing” –The New Yorker
“Akinmusire sounds less like a rising star than one that was already at great heights and just waiting to be discovered.” –Downbeat Magazine
California-born trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire started off jamming with gospel music at his church and is a now a forward-thinking musician with a knack for atmospheric post-bop. This cutting edge jazz artist first caught the attention of saxophonist Steve Coleman while performing in a workshop with his high school jazz band in Berkeley and was asked to come on Coleman`s European tour. From that day forward Akinmusire was immersed in the jazz scene and later went on to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition as well as being named Rising Start Jazz Artist and Rising Star Trumpet in Down Beat Magazine. Akinmusire has already staked his place at the vanguard of jazz and artistic expression and is considered one of the most exciting young jazz musicians in the world. Though a full time touring musician with a jam-packed schedule this young virtuoso respects the delicate balance of life and his art and said in an interview, “I`m a human being first. Those things that come before being a jazz musician just make you a better musician.”
