When the devil had finished all his tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” So ends Luke’s story of the temptations in the desert, that part of Jesus’s story we recall at the beginning of Lent. This implies, does it not, that there were other temptations? This play imagines and explores other temptations, tests or trials Jesus had to face.

Hearing or reading the stories about Jesus in the gospels is good. A play, by contrast, invites you into the story and gives you an opportunity to look at the story from within. A play can help you identify with the characters, especially if you speak some lines. A play also lets you play with the elements of the story to imagine “what-ifs.” It’s not unlike children’s pretend play – like playing house.

Inhabiting a story allows the yeast of God’s transforming love to be mixed into the ground grain of our lives, of our beings, in a more immediate way, involving our imagination and emotions – head and heart.

On Friday, March 21st, at 7 pm at St. Mary’s Kerrisdale, we will have an opportunity to do this. There will be a staged reading of a new play about the temptations that Jesus faced; perhaps this will give us insights into our own story, including the temptations we face. Come to participate – or just to watch. Invite friends and neighbours for a stimulating evening.
