Date Movie: Around the Year, Around the Clock… at the Movies (Part 1)

Nineteen years in the making, this six hour movie mashup features 1800 clips from 700 different films, representing countries around the globe, spanning the entire history of film — and every clip depicting a specific date on the calendar.

Drop in when you want, stay as long as you wish. Whether you watch six minutes or all six hours, you will be treated to a dizzying array of human experiences and emotions. A celebration of the movies, but more than that — a contemplation of what goes on in our world at any given moment, every day of the year.

This screening marks the world premiere of Part 1 of the project, a long-form video montage that will eventually move through 12 months of the year over the course of 12 hours, mapping the progression of 12 months of calendar time onto the 12-hour progression of the clock. The installation begins at 10 a.m. each day with film clips showing the events of November 1st, moving through each day of the month until we reach December first at precisely 11 a.m. Passing through the days leading up to Christmas Eve, the montage comes to a climax as we approach New Year’s Eve, moving to New Year’s Day at the stroke of 12 o’clock, then onward through January, February, March, and April until the doors close at 4 p.m. each day. The artist will be in attendance many days, continuing to work on creating montages for May, June, July and so on.

About the artist:

Ron Reed is a longtime Richmond resident who founded Pacific Theatre in 1984. The company worked out of the Richmond Gateway Theatre until 1994, when they built a permanent performance home in Vancouver. At the end of 2020 Ron retired from his position as Artistic Director to work as a freelance visual artist, actor, writer, and director.
