In the summer of 1965, as he prepared for living in a hermitage, Thomas Merton was writing about how some forms of communicating connect us, and some alienate us from one another and from our habitat. What Merton has to teach about generative, relational communicating is discovered not by studying the content of particular writings, but through attention to what the communicative writing was intended to do.
