To usher in the advent season, Pacific Spirit United Voices and Chamber Orchestra is pleased to present the perennial favourite Handel’s Messiah as well as Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël.
The concert opens with Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio), which is a ten-part work for 5 soloists, chorus, small orchestra and organ, first performed at Christmas in 1858 at the beautiful church La Madeleine, in Paris. The work is lyrical in character, opening with a prelude, setting the mood for the Christmas story and ends with a stirring chorale-like tune that rousingly heralds in the season of Christmas.
Handel’s Messiah, which almost needs no introduction, is a large-scale work with chorus, soloists and full orchestra, set in the English. Included in the concert is the entire Part I, with numerous selections from Part II and III.
