Not much is written about Holy Saturday, the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday in the bible.

After the death of Jesus, Joseph Arimathea requested for Jesus’ body and placed Jesus’ body in his own tomb. Together with Nicodemus, he wrapped Jesus up in linen as per Jewish burial customs. The women who were with Jesus saw where Jesus was placed and went back to prepare perfume and spices. This process was incomplete as they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment (Luke 23:51-56).

One can only imagine how the sabbath day was for the women and Jesus’ disciples. A day of focusing on God. At the same time, a day of deep sadness and sense of loss. A day where one cannot numb one’s pain with actions and plans of what’s next.

With the Sabbath commandment, God provided a rhythm that mirrored his own. As the creator of the heavens and earth and all that is in them, he reminds us all that He is the sovereign God. He continues to be sovereign even in deep pain and the loss of perspective.

In remembering the Easter Story this year, the WEA is calling for a prayer vigil on Holy Saturday to focus on our God and to rest in Him in the face of the unrest this year.

Let’s cry out to God for our broken world

Across the world, communities are suffering. Wars rage, families are displaced, persecution rises, and nations groan under the weight of injustice. The pain is real, the need is urgent—but we serve a sovereign God.

On Holy Saturday, April 19, 2025, we invite believers from every nation to stand together in 24 hours of non-stop prayer. Collectively, we will affirm the Gospel message and also pray for the world we live in.

The day between Good Friday’s sorrow and Easter Sunday’s victory is a time of waiting, of longing, of trusting. Together, let’s cry out to God for our broken world — for peace, for justice, for the hope of Christ to shine in the darkest places.
