There has been a tendency for scholars, when reflecting on the life and prolific writings of George MacDonald, to focus on his works of imagination, novels, sermons and literary criticism. And yet, his first published booklet was Novalis’ Spiritual Songs (1851) and his larger book, Exotics (1876), was a treatment of significant German Romantics. It is virtually impossible to understand MacDonald without being immersed in German Romantic thought and literature, and Ron Dart’s reflection will explore this topic.
