Life-Light by Thomas Brasch: Reception

You’re invited to a reception at the Dal Schindell Gallery on Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 7 pm for the opening of visual artist Thomas Brasch’s exhibition Life-light. The reception will be preceded by a pre-show talk from 2 to 3 pm with Thomas and special guest Amanda Hope Haley.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In Life-light, Toronto-based photographer and visual artist Thomas Brasch turns images taken at sites of senseless violence into luminous mandalas, resulting in stunning abstractions that speak volumes without the need for graphic imagery. Comprising three collections of the artist’s works, including Out of the Darkness, Englightenment and Hebron, Life-light also celebrates our collective wisdom and spirit through geometric images derived from sacred spaces and other notable architecture. The exhibition also features a collaboration with biblical archaeologist Amanda Hope Haley that uses imagery captured from archeological digs in Israel and Palestine.

Every image in Life-light is a visual representation of the history of a specific place meant to spark discussion, contemplation and, ultimately, hope.

PRE-SHOW ARTIST TALK

A special artist talk with both Thomas Brasch and guest Amanda Hope Haley will take place at the Gallery from 2 to 3 pm preceeding the opening reception from 4 to 7 pm. Come and hear more about Life-light and Amanda’s research as an archeologist.

ARTIST RESIDENCY

Thomas will be in-residence in the gallery on June 14 from 8:30 am–12 noon to offer private tours to anyone interested.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Thomas Brasch (B.A., B.Ed., MBA) has devoted thirty years to education before embarking on his second career as a photographer. Completely self-taught in the discipline, he is able to showcase his perceptions of beauty, turning the real into surreal. He has had several solo shows in Toronto and has been in several group shows internationally. With a background in sciences, languages, education, and business, he is able to blend the skills he has learned and apply them to his artistic practice. His style of abstraction is multi-layered, providing an underlying statement to the aesthetics. His representational work highlights his discoveries from the ancient to the modern during his journeys.

The Dal Schindell Gallery is located at Regent College, which sits on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation.
