Trinity Western University’s Board of Governors are pleased to announce that well-known scholar Liu Peng, MA, will be the recipient of a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at TWU’s School of Graduate Studies commencement ceremony on Saturday, November 1.
Liu is highly respected in China and around the world. An expert on religions in the US, comparative state-religion relations, and religion and law, he is the founder and director of the Pu Shi Institute for Social Sciences, which was established in 1999 as an independent, non-profit, non-governmental think tank dedicated to the protection of religious freedom in China.
“Global engagement is an important element of our academic community,” said TWU Provost W. Robert Wood, Ph.D. “We have had long-standing academic relationships with institutions in China, in particular. Through such relationships, we have developed a great appreciation for the academic scholarship and contributions to Chinese thought that Paul Liu has made.”
A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 1991-2012, Liu has been a visiting scholar at Rutgers University, Georgetown University, and the University of Notre Dame. Liu also serves as Affiliate Fellow at the Emory University Center for the Study of Law and Religion and the Brigham Young University International Centre for Law and Religion Studies.
On Thursday, October 30, Liu will speak at a public forum on Religion and the Rule of Law in China Today.
