We hope to see you all at the next lecture entitled, “Of Kingfishers and Other Fires: Inscapes as Patterns of Being in Hopkins” by Prof. Allen Haaheim. This talk will bring together aspects of the thought of Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins to explore “inscape,” a word he coined that, in his own words, means “design, pattern” and constitutes “the very soul of art.” While strict definitions remain elusive, it is clear that he intentionally structured his poetry as inscapes of word, meaning, and sound. His poem “Pied Beauty” will serve as an example. Inscape also gets to the very being of things—including ours—and comes from Christ and His presence. To this end, we will look at what I call his “ontology of fire” as illustrated in “As Kingfishers Catch Fire” and “The Windhover.”

While it’s a free event, we ask that you register so that we plan for the right number of people (If there’s too many for our little classroom, we’ll move it next door to Trinity Western University).

We look forward to see you there!
