Upward Basketball FAQs
- What is Upward Sports?
Upward Sports is the world’s largest Christian sports league for youth athletics and is focused on developing the total athlete and creating individuals with strong character, confidence and spirit. Basketball, at the recreational level for children in grades one to five, is the sport selected by Coquitlam Alliance Church through which to promote these purposes. For more information about Upward Sports visit www.upward.org
- How do I register my child?
The basketball league is open for girls and boys in grades one to five. Registration can be completed in person at Coquitlam Alliance Church, 2601 Spuraway Avenue, Coquitlam, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Tuesday to Friday, and after any service on the weekend, or online beginning January 6th at http://www.upward.org/league/G491876015/BKL/. Registration forms are available at the church, or by clicking here. You can also pick up a form and register at the Upward Basketball table located in the Children’s Ministry area during weekend services.
- Is there a cost?
Early registration cost is $65 per child before March 1. After March 1, the cost is $75, and the last day for registration in March 8. Registration includes a reversible jersey, t-shirt, end-of-season gift, and other items.
- How long is the season/program?
League practices will start the week of March 31st and the league will conclude with a Closing Celebration on Sunday, June 1. All participants will also need to attend a short evaluation/orientation on Saturday, March 1 or March 8, at Kwayhquitlum Middle School.
- How much of a time commitment is this on a family?
The time commitment is approximately two hours each week. One hour for practice, and one hour for a game each Saturday morning. Basketball practice and games will be held at Kwayhquitlum Middle School. Practices will be Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
- How are teams formed?
Players are required to attend a brief, drop-in evaluation before the league starts. The dates and times for the evaluations can be found in the registration form. Teams will be formed after evaluations have been completed. Children will be assigned to teams based on grade in school and the teams will be comprised of children with varying levels of skill.
We are unable to finalize teams, practice days, or game times until registration is complete and we know how many are registered by grade.
- How will I know which day my child will practice?
A coach assigned to your child’s team will contact you after the evaluations and before practices start, at which time the coach will tell you the day of the week for your child’s team practice. This should occur one to two weeks before the league starts.
We are unable to finalize teams, practice days, or game times until registration is complete and we know how many are registered by grade.
- How will I know what time games will be on Saturdays?
When your child’s coach contacts you to tell you about the practice day, the coach will also have the game schedule and be able to tell you what time each Saturday your child’s game will occur. Games may start at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. each Saturday, so the start time for your child’s game may change from one week to the next, but you will get the schedule before the league starts.
We are unable to finalize teams, practice days, or game times until registration is complete and we know how many are registered by grade.
- How can I get involved?
Upward provides opportunities to become meaningfully involved in the program. Volunteers are needed to:
- pray for the program
- coach a basketball team
- referee basketball games
- score and timekeep for basketball games
- lead a halftime activity
Training is provided for all volunteers. Coaches are required to obtain a police record check and attend Plan To Protect, a free training program provided by CAC for all children workers.
- Is an Upward Basketball league different than other basketball leagues?
No and yes. It is the same in that basic basketball skills are taught. It may be different in that:
- Games are played against other teams within the league.
- The emphasis is not on winning but promoting character and self-esteem in every child.
- The substitution system provides every child the opportunity to be in the starting lineup, requires that no child sit out back-to-back periods, and allows every child to play at least half of the game.
- Children will have the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ.
