Oceans placental, but soon a new hydro of gone
Dennis Lee

You didn’t come into this world. You came out of it, like a wave from the ocean. You are not a stranger here.
Alan Watts

…the ocean contains the switch of life. Not land, not the atmosphere. The ocean. And that switch can be turned off.
Alanna Mitchell

Life on earth depends on the ocean’s finely tuned chemical balance. Oceans produce most of the planet’s oxygen while their currents, winds and water-cycles regulate climate. Scientific evidence tells us that temperature, salinity and pH balance are all changing. The Sea Change Colloquium invites ocean scientists to join with scholars, poets, artists, curators and interested public to engage in an interdisciplinary forum on ocean change and its ecological and social implications. The purpose is to expand knowledge, disseminate understandings and increase public awareness about these critical issues.

The colloquium is intended to incubate multiple ongoing projects. We are seeking to foster multidisciplinary collaborations to produce research-creation projects for exhibition and publication. We are inviting scientists, scholars, and artists into 1) cross disciplinary conversation exchanging expertise from a variety of disciplines;
2) with the intention to collaborate in emergent arts-based research using a range of methodologies; in order to 3) generate research-creation projects, and 4) spark school-based and community arts-based projects.

Following the colloquium, artists, writers and scientists will be invited to collaborate in generating bodies of creative research to be exhibited and published. The Reach Museum Gallery intends to curate an exhibition and publish a catalogue. Langley Fine Arts School intends to focus on ocean change as their year-long curriculum theme. Community-based projects are intended for Abbotsford and Langley. Public symposia held during the exhibitions are intended to provide forums for keynote lectures and discussions on how communities can respond in effective and meaningful ways.

The outcomes of the colloquium will be embodied in works of art, contained in essays, exhibited in public museums/galleries and will generate school and community based projects. Results will be disseminated via travelling exhibition, exhibition catalogue and discussed in public forums and lectures.

Woven through the“ Arts + Environment” conference will be an ocean change theme, culminating with the Saturday event where ocean scientists will join the conversation. The Verge Conference welcomes submissions with an ocean change theme.

Verge conference attendees are welcome to participate and the public is welcome to attend. There is no charge for the Saturday event, but registering your intention to continue through Saturday is requested. We envision a generative participatory conversation and welcome your involvement.
