New recital series features acclaimed musical storytellers
TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture presents the second instalment of its Faculty + Friends Recital Series, Songs of Love, Loss, and Laughter. The recital, which will be held January 11, 2015, features bass-baritone soloist and TWU alumnus Chad Louwerse [2] (’98), and renowned pianist and SAMC Music instructor Betty Suderman [3], DMA. SAMC is honoured to feature these acclaimed musical storytellers in performance, a gift to our students and the wider community.
From the balmy songs of Napoli to the dreamy, Spanish-inspired airs of Don Quixote, this eclectic selection of art songs, spirituals, and just-plain-funny songs will delight first-time recital goers and connoisseurs alike. Louwerse and Suderman will perform works by Tosti, Ibert, Schumann, and Canadian composer Jeff Smallman.
Poised to take his place among the most important bass-baritones of his generation, Louwerse debuted in Europe with l’Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg as Bernadino in Berlioz’ Benvenute Cellini. In Canada, he has been heard from coast to coast. He starred as Boniface in Haydn’s Il Mondo Della Luna, sang Talpa in Il Tabarro, and covered Leporello in Don Giovanni with the Montreal Opera.
An in-demand performer of Lieder and chamber music, Suderman has concertized across Canada, the Pacific Northwest, Europe, and Africa. She has recorded with Vancouver Cantata Singers, The Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir, and West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir, including performances with Edith Wiens, Ben Heppner, and Colin Balzer.
