The band is big. The band is jazz. And we got our start on W. 45th Ave in Vancouver.
We started as a 6 person collective rehearsing in a basement, making music for each other. It didn’t matter what we played or whether people liked it–all that mattered was that we played honestly and passionately. That was Summer of 2013. 6 people limited what we could play, and the early days were a lot of trial and error, but something clicked. A lot has changed since then. 18 of the best up and coming musicians from the Lower Mainland meet every week to push themselves and each other as musicians. The folders have been filled with original music from Jaelem’s pen as well as current and brand new compositions and arrangements. And people ended up liking what they heard, so we now put on a bunch of shows between September and May. But one thing remains; our commitment to bringing quality, exciting, and fresh live big band music to as many folks as we can.
Jaelem Bhate’s 45th Avenue Jazz Band is comprised of 18 of the grooviest and hippest up and coming musicians in the Metro Vancouver Area. Not your Grandfather’s band, we push the boundaries and your conceptions of what a big band can do. You’ll have to catch a show to find out what we mean.
