You are invited to an Evening of Music on March 31 at 8pm for Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” an oratorio for choir and orchestra.
Originally premiered in 1787 in major cities across Europe, “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” was written for the Lenten practice of reflecting on each of the last words spoken by Jesus as he hung on the cross. Each of the words receives its own musical mediation in this work, along with an introductory meditation at its open and an earthquake meditation at its close, for a total of nine movements. In the years after its initial publication, Haydn adapted the original orchestral composition for string quartet, choral, and piano versions. This performance, under the direction of Edette Gagne and produced by Tony Lee, features soloists Catherine Crouch, Maria Golas, Steve Froese, and Kevin Burke, and the Harmonia String Ensemble.
This concert is free and open to all, and registration is requested as we expect a large crowd. This concert will also be available for online participation, please register to receive a concert link.
