Understanding and Caring for the Parents and Families in your Community
It’s a lesson we often learn for too late… family matters! It’s just not enough to be a ministry with “something for everyone.” The parents of our kids are the most strategic and significant youth and children’s workers in the church and can be the biggest pain in the neck or are very best partners as we seek to meet the spiritual needs of the kids in our care.
Over more than 40 years of ministry, Marv has developed a practical model for working with parents that turns them into allies. This evening of teaching gets beyond suggesting that we ask parents to drive the van and bring cookies to the next lock in. It explores practical ways to connect with parents that will build trust and respect. It acknowledges the diversity of contemporary family structures which must be taken into account and gives special encouragement to younger youth workers who may feel that their age disqualifies them from working effectively with parents. Special attention will be given to working with parents who are “outside the lines” of our narrow traditional views of family – single parents, blended families, families who do not attend your church, parents who are committed to a religion other than Christianity, hostile parents, and destructive, dysfunctional parents.
Dr. Marv Penner
