‘Mission from everywhere to everywhere’ is happening right before our eyes. Migration, globalization, and the rise of younger churches are, among other factors, forcing us to re-think missions. It is no longer one-way traffic as in from the West to the East or from the North to the South. It is also much more complicated than ever before. It requires us to ask, ‘what are some mission principles that do not change?’
We will look at several key mission principles that have guided the world missions during the late 19th century when the gospel was first introduced to Korea. We will ask, “What did the pioneering missionaries and early converts do ‘right’ to ensure the free passage of the gospel?” We will examine such crucial issues as the encounter between the gospel and culture (contextualization), mission and money (dependency), and the pioneering missionaries and the emerging national leaders (empowerment). Our hope is that these enduring mission principles can help us in our efforts to be more effective in the world missions today.
Dr. Minho Song is passionate about helping churches become healthy and missional. He has been with Young Nak Presbyterian Church of Toronto for more than 25 years, pastoring its English and Korean speaking congregations. He was also a missionary to the Philippines, teaching at Asian Theological Seminary and pastoring a Filipino congregation. Presently, he divides time between pastoring his congregation in Toronto and teaching at several seminaries around the world. He is married to Meja for 35 years and has three grown up children.
