We would love for you to join us for our first CPC3 Lecture of the semester, which will be on Thursday, October, 1st from 7:00-9:00pm at our college. It will be presented by Jens Zimmermann.
Jens Zimmermann is a philosophical theologian and the J.I. Packer Chair of Theology at Regent College/UBC in Vancouver. He is the author of several works on theology, humanism, and human flourishing, and his new book, What Is Christian Humanism: Recovering a Human Society, will be released in October.
In his encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo the XIV analyzes the current “technocratic paradigm and digital power” in light of Catholic social teaching. When measured against the “inalienable dignity of the human person, the common good, the universal destination of goods, subsidiarity, solidarity, and social justice,” do the increasingly pervasive digital infrastructure and algorithms contribute to human flourishing or undermine it?
In this lecture, Jens Zimmermann will argue that, whatever its gains may be, digital culture is largely detrimental to a Christian understanding of education. While many advocate for the careful integration of digital technology, including A.I. into the humanities, Zimmermann will argue that resistance may be more important than integration.
