Keynote Title: “My group is too quiet!”

Why are your group members so quiet during the session, but you hear them talking incessantly in their own language outside the room?  Janice will explore some cross-cultural communication and group dynamics which affect how learners participate with each other and you, the facilitator.  Affective factors will also be touched upon.

About the keynote speaker:

Janice Penner started her TESOL career in a church sponsored English class in Japan in 1979. Since then she has finished a BRE, B Ed and M Ed and  taught academic prep English in universities and colleges in Edmonton, Beijing, Taipei, Kyoto and Vancouver. Her current academic home is Douglas College – Coquitlam. Janice has facilitated the activities of the ESL Ministry Network since 2006.

Workshop 1:  “Tasks to Facilitate Meaningful Communication” with Janice Penner

In this workshop you will experience several tasks which provide opportunities for your learners to speak without your “interference.” Task design guidelines will be provided so that you can create or adapt materials for your own session topics. This workshop will be most useful for novice ESL facilitators.

Workshop 2: “Using Hymns with Intermediate ESL Learners” with Ruthi Mathewson

Ruthi has been serving in Broadmoor Baptist Church’s ESL Ministry for about 8 years.  She has worked with Beginners right through to Advanced.  For the past few years she has concentrated in the Upper Intermediate range and features hymns in her language acquisition activities.  In this workshop you will experience how Ruthi uses hymns and how they help facilitate faith conversations with her students.

Workshop 3: “The WORD for ESL”  with Karen Hamade & Joy McCarthy

The Word for ESL ( is a ministry that helps ESL learners explore and learn the Bible.  Karen Hamade, the founder and leader of The WORD for ESL Ministries, will help introduce the course and how it is used in various settings.  Joy McCarthy has a background in Bible Translation and currently coordinates the WORD for ESL classes at Seven Oaks Alliance Church.  She will explain the ins and outs of starting a WORD for ESL Course.

Workshop 4: “Conversation Strategies for ESL Beginners” with Jo-Ann Matiachuk

This workshop is an opportunity to expand your repertoire of communicative language activities for beginning students.   Bring your favorite communicative language learning activities to share and let’s learn from one another.  Jo-Ann has taught Beginner level ESL at Broadmoor and will lead you through a sample of meaningful practice strategies that students really enjoy.

Workshop 5: “Facilitating Pronunciation Skills for ESL Students” with Jan Smith (M.S., CCC-SLP)

This workshop will offer some general techniques to help ESL facilitators develop new language sounds with ESL students. These pronunciation techniques will be practised in the workshop.

Jan is an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certified speech/language pathologist, as well as the minister of Acme Presbyterian Church in Acme, Washington.
