“Art has the ability to act as a reconciling bridge between cultures, bringing diverse and critical conversation in culture. This exhibit, in response to the 3/11 tsunami and the ensuing disaster that reshaped Japan, also has the vision to mimic God’s path to create a bridge of salvation and restoration to us. I am delighted that the Regent community can host such an event: I spent a week this summer speaking on Culture Care, teaching on the importance of moving away from culture wars metaphor, to see the culture as an ecosystem to steward rather than a territory to be fought over. This type of effort is precisely what the church should be doing to serve culture, giving artists an opportunity to participate. May we all become gardeners of culture soil, tilling the ground for the next generations of artists and viewers to bring beauty into the world, even in the midst of devastation of northern Japan.”

Makoto Fujimura, artist and author of Culture Care
