Ideas That Matter is an online lecture series hosted by Regent College this academic year with the purpose of cultivating theological engagement with contemporary issues that are particularly relevant at this cultural moment.
Why do poetry and literature matter when the world seems to be burning around us, both literally and figuratively? Why should we pay attention to poets when there are significant needs at every turn? Please join us as Regent College welcomes Dr. Malcolm Guite, who is giving thought to these important questions.
W.H. Auden famously wrote that “poetry makes nothing happen,” (though the poem in which he wrote it begs to differ!). Percy Bysshe Shelley, on the other hand, said that “poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.” Bearing both of these quotes in mind, this lecture will show the practical and powerful difference poetry has made and can make to the way we live now, especially to the way we deal with our present crises.
Malcolm Guite is the Chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge. He teaches for the Divinity Faculty in Cambridge and lectures widely in England and North America on Theology and Literature. He is the author of numerous books and works of poetry. Some of his more recent publications include Waiting on the Word (Canterbury 2015); Parable and Paradox (Canterbury 2016); Mariner: A Voyage With Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Hodder & Stoughton, 2017); and After Prayer (Canterbury Press, 2019).
