About the Workshop:

Creation and creativity are key facets of a vibrant and thriving spiritual life.  Our God, the Creator of all things, invites us to join with Him in the work of creation—woven in the fabric of the great Story of God’s great work.

In this workshop, we will begin with a study of scripture and theology centering on four attributes: beauty, mindfulness, stewardship, and making. We will explore the creative storytelling of the Holy Spirit in scripture.  The day will include a practical outworking of the themes through creatively spiritual exercises including drawing and mixed media.  No previous artistic experience is necessary for participation.

About Jill Schuler:

Jill Schuler is a creator of wearable textiles and an arts facilitator.  Her passion is to create space for others to grow through creative encounters with God.  Jill has a BA in design & applied arts and an MA in theology and the arts.  As an adjunct instructor, she teaches “Aesthetics: Arts & Christianity” at a local Bible College.  She founded and facilitates a monthly arts ministry called CreativiTea – the art of being creative while drinking tea.  She enjoys dancing, travelling, and, not surprisingly, a good cup of tea.  As part of the WeMakeStuff team, Jill helps to affirm and document the work of local artists.  Jill says, “I make sense of what I’m experiencing and learning by making art.  Art-making is a generative action.  It reminds us that we have the power to transform and to produce beauty.”

About Joy Kirkwood:

Joy Kirkwood is a skilled artist and arts educator who teaches a diversity of adult and children’s visual arts classes at Place des Arts, Coquitlam BC and through the ‘ArtStarts in Schools’ program, as well as private art and creativity classes. Joy has a BFA in Visual Arts from Mount Allison University. Additional courses that enhance her expertise: Perspectives on Art as Therapy, Arts Education, and Christian Imagination at Regent College, BC. Highlights of her 30-year varied and noteworthy career as a self-employed art teacher: Expressive Arts teacher at Wellspring Calgary (innovative cancer support centre) and curriculum based arts educator with the CBE and CCSD school districts in Calgary AB. Joy’s thought for the day; “Creativity is God’s gift and it is a delight to see the artistic and creative talents of others brought to the surface; with a bit of encouragement and guidance.”
