Churches and communities are experiencing an unprecedented ministry challenge and opportunity over the next 25-40 years in responding to an aging population. There needs to be a more cooperative and informed approach to discerning, planning and resourcing local church ministries to serve the varied needs of older adults and their families. This summer symposium aims to bring together participants for consultation and mutual encouragement through plenary input sessions, guided discussion, resourcing workshops and other network building activities. The topics and issues addressed will be helpful for either those currently involved or those interested in developing new and connecting ministries with older adults. Pastors, church leaders, health/social care professionals and anyone interested in learning about and making a contribution to this emerging missional challenge and opportunity are encouraged to attend.

* We are encouraging you and others from your church to plan to join us for a time of networking, consultation and vision formation, as we respond to this emerging ministry/mission challenge and opportunity. Watch here for more information over the coming weeks.

Keynote speakers:

Dr. Paul Pearce, Dr. Paul Stevens, and Rev. Fay Puddicombe

Monday morning:
Being and Serving Older Adults: The Challenges and Opportunities
Dr. Paul Pearce, Director for the Centre for Healthy Aging Transitions/ Carey Institute
Our communities and churches are experiencing an unprecedented time of change due to a rapidly growing demographic of older adults (55+/-)
The aging “boomers” generation is providing the church with a “generational mission” possibility which will require a thoughtful and creative response and resourcing. This session will provide an orientation to the symposium and dialogue for discerning together how we can network, resource and support one another in our lives and ministries. We will review the factors (vocational, wellness, social, resources, spiritual) contributing to healthy aging and how they will influence our own lives and those we serve.

Monday evening PUBLIC LECTURE. 7:00 P.M. @ CAREY
Aging and Spirituality: Faith Flourishing in the Second Half and Third Third of Life
Dr. R. Paul Stevens, Professor Emeritus, Marketplace Theology, Regent College
The process of aging is itself a spiritual discipline, inviting us to go deep, to find a more substantial and significant relationship with God and life. There are patterns of spiritual growth, sometimes called “spiritual disciplines,” which are especially significant for people as they age, and these will be considered in the seminar. But in the process of aging, various vices and virtues are revealed, which when identified can enable us to flourish and produce spiritual fruit in the maturing years. Practical steps, hands-on engagement and interaction will be included in this presentation.

Tuesday morning:
Don’t Retire….Refire!
Rev. Fay Puddicombe, Pastor with the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada
Certified Retirement Coach

How do you find vision and mission for our retirement years? During this session we will look at ways to evaluate where we are, the numerous areas of life to consider when retiring and how to find that ‘spark’ that makes this new phase of life exciting and meaningful. How can you use the skills and experience you gathered in your working career to have an impact now? Through discussion and some fun exercises, we will together explore the opportunities.
