Local Children’s Choir Performs Folk Song | Far & Near

The Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir presents their spring concert, Folk Songs | Far & Near, on Friday, June 3. Directed by Betty-Ann Vroom, the concert will be held at 7:30 pm at South Abbotsford Church.

The talented choral group The Alumni Project, directed by Sonja Hindmarsh and Carmen Hollett, will be joining them as guests for the evening. This collaboration is a highlight for both choirs. Carmen and Sonja previously co-directed PMCC, while Betty-Ann currently sings with The Alumni Project.

“I’m excited to direct and perform in PMCC’s spring concert,” says Betty-Ann. “Our singers need to see that singing together can be done at every age. They don’t need to stop singing once they graduate from PMCC.”

With choreographed songs, an audience sing-a-long, and dancers from the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance, Folk Songs | Far & Near will be a delight for the ears and the eyes. Highlights include a dramatic arrangement of “Are You Sleeping,” and a choreographed performance of “Roar,” by Katy Perry. The Alumni Project will perform “Country Dances” by the Swingle Singers, a fast paced collection of American folk songs.

The concert features songs from Vancouver to Newfoundland to the USA to Zambia. The international theme of this concert emphasizes an important value of PMCC: to be ambassadors of musical excellence at home and abroad. In July, a small group of singers from PMCC will tour to England. While there, they will sing in Canterbury Cathedral with other children’s choirs from around North America.

PMCC has a long history of travel: past tours have brought the choir to Ottawa, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Italy (to name a few). “Our young singers will get the amazing opportunity to experience other cultures. They will meet and connect with singers from other parts of North America,” says Betty-Ann. “And we are beginning that cultural experience here at home, singing folk songs from around the world.”

Don’t miss this delightful concert on Friday, June 3 at 7:30 at South Abbotsford Church (32424 Huntingdon Rd).  Tickets are available for sale at House of James or King’s Music, or online at www.brownpapertickets.com. (Cost: $15 for adults and $10 for students, plus applicable fees).

The Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir is an auditioned choir for unchanged voices. They value musical excellence and the joy of singing in community. To audition or to find out more, visit their website at www.pmcc.ca.
