In this thought-provoking and visually fascinating exhibition, Pilar Mehlis explores the transformative impact of immigration through the juxtaposition of natural and human migrations. Her Antrofish figure illustrates the way in which the immigration experience “dresses” an individual in new cultures, languages, sensations, ideas, and attitudes, producing a hybridized person who belongs to two places and cultures but remains distinct from each. This exhibition raises questions relating to identity, sense of place, and cultural hybridization, with particular emphasis on Mehlis’s own transformative move from Bolivia to Canada.
