”Preaching the Parables of Jesus”
Jesus of Nazareth, the greatest Preacher Who ever lived (!), did most of His preaching through Parables. Not only so, for He also used other forms of communication, as we see in His Sermon on the Mount and His development of His “I AM” claims in the Gospel of John. But for the most part He worked with Parables.
In this seminar we will first spend time grappling with the question “Why?” Why did Jesus choose this genre? To reveal? Or to conceal? Or both? And then what are the implications for us in preaching His Parables? We will then look at the various ways the Church has categorized His Parables: On God, on the Kingdom of God, on the People of God. And then we will take time to study a selected parable (or two) together, in the process coming up with a sermon on it (them).
In all of Jesus’ Parables He takes what at first seems obvious, and then, in a brilliant move, surprises us with something we would never have figured out on our own. Come, sit together at His feet, and enter into the surprises He has for us!
