Raising Hope: Exposing Exploitation and Lifting Up Women in Our Community
On International Women’s Day, REED is hosting a unique and inspiring fundraiser to celebrate women in the most powerful way we know!
Come on Friday, March 6th for an evening of music, appetizers and inspiration. Be empowered by several social justice experts in our community as they shed light on the realities of exploitation, and the real ways each of us can make a positive impact.

About the experts:
Cleta Brown: Cleta Brown’s long career in public service includes having worked in the Office of the Ombudsman of British Columbia, as Crown Counsel in the provincial courts and Alternate Chairperson of the BC Review Board. A long-time activist for women’s equality and human rights, Brown was a 2014 City Councillor Candidate for the Green Party, First Vice President of the University Women’s Club and sits on the Board of the Kidney Foundation of BC. Cleta is the daughter of the late Rosemary Brown, who made history by becoming the first black Canadian woman elected to a provincial legislature in 1972.
Dr. Michael Markwick: A teacher and renowned social analyst, Dr. Markwick’s reputation as human rights expert has been solidified through the work he’s done with the Ontario Human Rights Commission as well as the many Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal governments, non-profit organizations and countless businesses he’s worked with and for. A male feminist, Dr. Markwick calls for a paradigm shift around the male demand for paid sex, and has become a powerful male voice for social change. His research into the impact of the war on terror on democratic communication earned him a doctorate “with distinction” from Simon Fraser University. View his Ted Talk here: http://bit.ly/18lMKOD
Dr. Michelle Miller: Since founding REED (Resist Exploitation, Embrace Dignity) in 2005, Dr. Miller has been advocating for exploited and prostituted women across Canada for more than a decade. She’s pioneered advocacy work that includes the Buying Sex is Not a Sport campaign that gained international attention during the Olympics in 2010 and Intelligent Love, a public education program that exposes the realities of exploitation and works to shift the paradigms that keep women oppressed in Canada.
