One of the highlights of Regent Summer Programs is our free Evening Public Lectures. This series always features a wide range of professors and topics, and this year is no exception. All lectures will be streamed online, so invite a friend and join us!

Although how Paul read Scripture lies at the heart of his gospel, there is no consensus on the matter. This lecture proposes that the critical question is how Paul “knows.” While clearly not a “theologian,” and far closer to Hellenic historians, his significant differences suggest he is closest to Israel’s ancient prophets. Paul’s “in Christ” identity reflects a deep personal devotion to the LORD Jesus whom he met on the Damascus Road, not unlike Moses’ encountering Yahweh during the Exodus. His fundamental hermeneutic is similarly relational, and in assuming Yahweh’s faithful character, drives his vision of Christian transformation.

Rikk Watts is a Research Professor of New Testament at Regent College. His teaching and research interests focus on biblical studies and the profound impact of Scripture’s “grammar of life” on modernity, design, and innovation.

Dr. Watts will be teaching the course The Use of Israel’s Scriptures in the New Testament from July 19-23 as part of Regent’s 2021 Summer Programs.
