These sessions will describe atheism as something to be understood, not feared, and share how the Catholic intellectual tradition presents “holy doubt” as a route toward personal holiness. In the first session, different forms of atheism will be described in close detail, allowing us to make sense of what atheism is. Then, in the second session, the role of doubt will be looked at in the work of St. Augustine’s Confessions and the method of St. Thomas Aquinas. In the final session, the sense of God as something beyond the debates between believers and non-believers will be considered, with some practical and devotional alternatives suggested.
