The Seven Last Words, by Franz Joseph Haydn, was a commissioned work in 1785 for a Good Friday Service in Cadiz, Spain. The service will follow the seven last sayings or quotations of Christ as recorded in the Gospels. There is a short commentary on each quote, and then the quartet plays a moving musical reflection or “sonata” which paints the word in sound. Power point visuals, icons and candles add to the experience, as one candle is snuffed out at the end of each reading.
