Recent findings in psychology and neuroscience have confirmed what Christianity has affirmed for centuries: Shame is both endemic and toxic to the human soul.

Shame is not just a consequence of something our first parents did in the Garden of Eden,” writes psychiatrist Curt Thompson in The Soul of Shame, It is the emotional weapon that evil uses to corrupt our relationships with God and each other.” Pastor Ken Shigematsu makes a similar observation in his new book, Now I Become Myself. To thrive, we need connection with others. When shame pulls us away from others, it becomes more and more difficult for us to stay connected and to receive and offer love.”

In this webinar, guided by participant questions, host Carolyn Arends will talk with Curt and Ken about topics like:

  • Why is a sense of shame so pervasive in the human condition?
  • Is shame ever helpful? How is it related to guilt, conviction, and repentance?
  • What does the Bible say about shame?
  • What is the connection between shame and trauma?
  • What practices and postures help us receive the grace that can heal our shame?
