Historian Elliot Hanowski explores the activities of unbelievers who
resisted the dominance of Christianity in early 20th century Canada.
Anti-religious organizations gathered weekly to promote secularist
thought in the face of persecution and even violence. On the coasts,
controversies around religion allowed unbelievers to make their
voices heard in the public square. His research uncovers a largely
forgotten aspect of Canadian history.

Elliot Hanowski is a librarian at the University of Manitoba and author of
Towards a Godless Dominion: Unbelief in Interwar Canada (McGill-Queens
UP, 2023). He is one of the founders of the International Society for
Historians of Atheism, Secularism and Humanism.
