Topic: The NT includes gospel stories about women, as well as teachings on women’s practices and participation in the Christian community. We will explore several Gospel stories that illustrate how Jesus engaged with women, and then examine the difficult passages in Paul’s letters that seem to limit women’s participation in the church. Finally, we will note how Jesus’s words and actions challenge the xenophobia and ethnocentrism of our own day, and how Paul’s message to the church addresses our culture’s individualism in surprising ways. The study of women in the NT is not simply relevant for women’s rights today, as though biblical women are objects that can be abstracted to make principles. Instead, the NT women teach us today about faith and faithful service.
