ABOUT THE LECTURE

This lecture challenges popular Christian Zionist biblical support of the state of Israel. More specifically, it challenges the statement “God gave Israel the Land” by asking three questions: (1) What are the borders of the Land? (2) Who is Israel? (3) What is the meaning of divine giving? These questions are presented in dialogue with contemporary scholarship and biblical theology. After deconstructing the political assumptions behind these questions, the lecture presents a biblical theology of the land from a Palestinian evangelical perspective. Christ is at the centre of the pertinent inclusive theology, and is the means for advocating a better approach for peacemaking.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Yohanna Katanacho is currently the academic dean at Nazareth Evangelical College. He is an ordained minister with Christian and Missionary Alliance, a Billy Graham scholar, a Langham/John Stott Scholar, and the Scholar of the Year 2020 with Scholar Leaders International. He is a Palestinian Israeli Evangelical who studied at Bethlehem University (B.Sc.), Wheaton College (M.A.) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M. Div.; Ph.D.). He taught courses on Palestinian theology in Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Ukraine, and other places. He is the author of The Land of Christ: A Palestinian Cry (2013), Praying through the Psalms (2018), and Reading the Gospel of John through Palestinian Eyes (2020).

Dr. Katanacho is teaching Palestinian Theology in Context from July 18 to July 22 as part of Regent’s 2022 Summer Programs.
