Around Town: The Art of Art, Science & Governor General, Oakridge Lutheran …

Ten artists will be working onsite at YU’s ‘Art of the Art.’

Art will take centre stage as Youth Unlimited (YU) hosts The Art of Art: A West Coast Formal, November 18 at the Pipe Shop on the waterfront in North Vancouver.
Here is the plan for what sounds like a very lively evening:
In partnership with Art! Vancouver and Orbiiit, The Art of Art fundraiser is an interactive and innovative artistic engagement event for guests. From live art-making to food tasting; from savory innovation to soulful music and dancing, guests get to observe and participate as art is created.

Art from the 10 onsite, featured artists, as well as art from multiple artists across Greater Vancouver, will be on sale at the event’s silent auction, as well as items from some of Vancouver’s favorite stores and hot spots. Art created at the event will be auctioned off at the end of the night. Guests will get to select the winning food innovators and even decide which tattoo will be forever house on the back of a daring YU supporter who is creatively raising funds for YU’s at-risk and vulnerable youth.

Kathy van Gogh, one of The Art of Art’s featured live-painting artists, is sharing her talent to support vulnerable youth because she understands the myriad of unique struggles that can thwart a young life – and she knows it can also be overcome.

If Kathy’s last name sounds like a fun coincidence, it’s because it’s actually the real deal. Her father’s great-great-great grandfather was Vincent van Gogh’s uncle. And yes, the talent runs in the family – but the challenge is a name of such historic renowned can intimidate the young away from their own passions more strongly than it can invite them.

Youth Unlimited has been helping young people discover their potential since 1947. With nine chapters in Greater Vancouver, YU provides caring relationships and developmental opportunities for vulnerable youth through relevant programs and individual connections, aimed at fostering mental, physical, social, spiritual and emotional well-being among young people in the community.

Governor General: Science & faith

Governor General Julie Payette doesn’t seem keen on divine intervention.

I guess Governor-General Julie Payette missed my October 19 article in which I pointed out that Science and faith are getting along quite well. Ah well, she’d only been in office a few weeks by then. If she had read the article – which pointed to several excellent events hosted by the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation, and others, this fall – she might have avoided her recent faux pas.

Bruce Clemenger, president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) congratulated Payette on her new appointment in a November 6 open letter, then went on to say:

We were disheartened by your remarks at the Canadian Science Policy gathering in Ottawa, disparaging those who believe the universe has its origin through divine design or intervention. These remarks were deeply hurtful to many Canadians belonging to many religious traditions, including evangelical Christians.

Go here for the full comment. (John Stackhouse took her to task as well, and even the Globe and Mail featured a guest opinion piece titled Governor General 101: Don’t insult Canadians.)

Bro. Guy Consolmagno believes the stars proclaim the glory of their Creator.

However, our Governor General still has an excellent opportunity to mend her ways. If she were to fly out to Vancouver for 22nd, she could hear Bro. Guy Consolmagno, S.J. take on the topic Why Do We Look Up at the Heavens? at UBC’s Hebb Theatre.

Consolmagno is a highly regarded astronomer who also happens to be director of the Vatican Observatory. On the work conducted at the Observatory, Consolmagno writes:

All the science we do, and all the outreach we do, reflects a quality that motivates everything we do in astronomy: a sense of joy. The stars are glorious, and it’s a treat to be engaged in their study. Their glory proclaims the glory of their Creator!

Our new Governor General is an impressive woman – as a former astronaut she has seen God’s heavens in way most of us never will – but one hopes that even if she doesn’t manage to see Consolmagno in person, maybe she will yet have an opportunity to hear his message, or those of the many other Christian scientists who know their Creator.

Oakridge Lutheran / Catalyst

A rendering of the project being developed by Oakridge Lutheran church and Catalyst Community Developments.

Frances Bula’s November 3 Globe and Mail story tells of a fruitful partnership between Oakridge Lutheran Church and a unique non-profit developer. The insightful article begins this way:

Churches and non-profit groups that try to take advantage of their land to build needed low-cost housing in the region are often stuck with an imperfect solution.

They have to go to a private developer, who typically agrees to build a limited number of units that can be rented for below-market rates. But most of the future project is dedicated to condos whose prices are well out of the range of the people they’d like to help and the churches loses its control of the land.

But the members of Vancouver’s Oakridge Lutheran church found another solution: working with the non-profit company Catalyst Community Developments and its president, Robert Brown.

The company and Mr. Brown are the only ones doing this work in the region.

The partnership with Catalyst will allow the church to build 46 apartments on its land in the pricey Oakridge area, right across the street from the Canada Line station and mall, with rents Vancouver hasn’t seen in a while: less than $1,000 a month for a studio apartment, around $1,400 for a two-bedroom. All of the apartments will be below-market rentals.
